3D stuff

You might be surprised to see me coming up with completely different design type. I'm not surprised if you ARE surprised, because 3D is something I have never approached before. Honestly, it takes up more effort than doing 2D (especially that'd be a plus point if you have a good 3D sense, which I'm lacking of, unfortunately). So taking a 3D class this quarter is definitely a challenge but I've liked it so far.

The following two pieces that I produced - you might think, "only two?", but seriously the work time took FOREVER - are the results of the last seven weeks of studio time.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

THE DEMENTED CAT AND ITS POOR PREY
(Wire project)
Medium: Black wire of 20 gauge and 24 gauge, white wire
Inspiration: Tom and Jerry
Highlight: The cat's face
Emphasis: movement
Note:
I wanted to emphasize movement and aggressiveness as portrayed by the cat's pose, hope that came out well. In addition to that, I also thought of making the two "sequels" of the piece, involving the cat lifting up the mouse in its claws, followed by the mouse - now dead - clutched in the cat's mouth. And yes, it's hard to crimp and twist the thick wire since you need a tool for it, whose name I forget. Wish I could have developed more details on to it though ><

BIG BANG

(Geometric form)
Medium: cover papers of assorted colors and patterned paper contributed by Indri
Inspiration: Solar system????
Highlight: I just loveeee the two balls hanging on each sides of the wire. By the way they are movable.
Emphasis: Interpeneration, Interlocking, Juxtaposition, movement
Note:
According to my classmates and instructor in the critique today, the piece looks "fun, entertaining, and funky". I'm pleased that it received positive reviews. I didn't know where I got the inspiration from cos basically I didn't have the basic sketch for it. I instinctively started off making various kinds of unit (blocks, cubes, pyramids, and even the ball) then put them all together.

Okay, I'll stop it right there. Don't worry, I'm not going to convert this blog into a complete design blog. I'll still be working on stories, but let's just wait for the right time.

Have a great President's Day long weekend holiday!

Some Digital Artworks

It's been a while since I haven't posted my recent designs on my blog. I'm considering to put these in my uni application portfolio. As you might have recalled, I once specialized in signature, banner, and avatar designs before I finally got to explore broader aspects in designing. So here are the results as of now. FYI, I taught myself Photoshop techniques and effects through video tutorials and I'll keep doing that to improve my skills!

Feedbacks are strongly encouraged!

Title: Sans Titre: A Wine Company
Type: Logo
Description:
I made this in response of my friend's request. She was making a fictional winery business for her business class project.

Title: Little Obama Screening Invitation
Type: Invitation
Description:
Indonesian Student Organization held a movie screening event to promote Indonesia to American society as well as International Student.

Title: Turning 25-Cho Kyuhyun
Type: Signature

Description:
I was kind of bored on February 4, a day after my Super Junior bias' birthday (it's no other than Cho Kyuhyun, the evil magnae). So I came up with the idea to make a tribute to him. I gotta say I love the lines in the background of the text!

Title: Happy Dragon is Happy (Happy Lunar New Year)
Type: Illustration
Description:
I haven't done coloring on Photoshop for two years. Last time, I took a coloring class in Machiko Manga School and how surprising that I still remembered how to apply the techniques they taught me.

Title: A Tribute to Alicia Keys
Type: Typography
Description:
Finally, a typography work! I have always wanted to make a typography but I never quite found out how. After seeing a video tutorial about a typography technique, I went on to make a piece, and this Alicia Keys was the result! Why Alicia Keys? Well, I just got back from New York when I made the piece, and New York somehow reminds me of her ;)

Title: A Tribute to Paul Klee
Type: Typography
Description:
Paul Klee was renowned for his painting and the colors just inspired me to make a typography piece dedicated to him (Well, typography isn't his kind of artwork but still...)

Title: When Life Gives you Melon...
Type: Typography Poster
Description:
It's a veryyyy simple typography work I did shortly after I finished the "Small Inspiration" one. I actually had fun experimenting on different types of typography and this "Lemon" piece is the result. Anyway, I didn't make the vector on my own. I found it on sweetclipart.com.

Title: A Small Inspiration can light up the Whole World
Type: Poster
Description:
It might look simple, but I'm trying to emphasize the lightbulb. Through this poster, I'd like to emphasize the message of the quote and relate it to the whole design.

Title: ISV Cover#1
Type: Slide Cover
Description:
My past covers were less creative because they normally took form of collages and blended images. So I was thinking to come up with something more creative. Later on, I decided to mess up around creating shapes with pen tool until they formed what now looked like little humans. The hands were purposely gestured to resemble the letter V for "Volunteer"

Title: ISV Cover#2
Type: Slide Cover
Description: My past covers were less creative because they normally took form of collages and blended images. So I was thinking to come up with something more creative. Later on, I decided to mess up around creating shapes with pen tool until they formed what now looked like little humans. The hands were purposely gestured to resemble the letter V for "Volunteer"

Title: Closing the Quarter
Type: Signature
Description: In celebrating the end of Winter Quarter, ISV took a trip to Global Winter Wonderland at Great America. The signature was to be displayed on the FB event page.

Title: Ice Breaker
Type: Illustration Slide
Description:
Okay, this one might not be that great or anything, but I just found it funny somehow. I created it within fifteen minutes (a short period of time to make a design). This utterly simple piece was to be placed as a slide in ISV meeting presentations. So when the slide in the presentation turns to this "Ice breaker" one, then everyone knows that it's time for games.

Title: ISV Flyer
Type: Flyer
Description:
This is a flyer I created to promote ISV in the club day. I didn't know what I had in mind when I made this. Probably I was possessed with the "Circle Syndrome" by the time I made it. There are just too many of them there!

BONUS!

Title: Dreams and Fantasies
Type: Self-Portrait
Description:
My second self-portrait! I made this in response of UCLA's portfolio requirement. I actually had a great time making it, although self-portrait is not really my specialization. Anyway, the stuff floating over me represents my favorites which are: music, dance, books, fun (depicted through carousel), art, books, and obviously Disneyland on the very top.

(My scanner kinda sucks. No matter how many times I tried to scan it to the computerthe entire frame, it kept getting slightly cropped on the edge).

When Superpower Goes Wrong- Chronicle Review

Hi guys!

I just came back from watching this very cool movie called Chronicle with my Kpop Dance Club folks. It's funny how I had no idea what the movie was about even until the first few minutes of it (not to mention I had to assure my friends that it wasn't anywhere near horror). However, the movie completely “killed” us. With that said, I couldn't help myself but do a little review about it in this post.

Set in Seattle, the sci/fi follows the story of a shy high school teenager, Andrew. As a geek in common, he was completely over his new video camera. He basically brought it everywhere, filming his daily life no matter where it takes place. When Andrew secluded himself during a party, he was approached by a boy, Steve, who persuaded him to film something that Steve and Andrew's cousin, Matt, just found. The discovery eventually resulted the group to develop telekinetic power – the ability of moving objects through mind.

When I said that the movie “killed”, I really meant of something simple in every aspect and even low-budget, could make a huge impression. The movie started off really simple as we were introduced to the life of a normal teenage boy to whom we felt pitiful at; he was picked on by school bullies, local muggers, and even rigorously abused by his alcoholic dad. Andrew's background and the discovery of his power allows a transition.

The movie itself transitioned slowly towards the end, from what was once a movie with simple, everyday life footage to somewhat darker, action-oriented scenes. The atmosphere also shifted as the movie itself started even with Matt singing to “Price Tag”. We really had no idea what it was about until the “discovery” scene.

The movie really changed in a whole for one-and-a-half hour simply in every way, including the protagonist's personality and even the cinematography.

Speaking of the cinematography, I had no problem with it. The movie was, well, a mockumentary. So basically we were given an impression as if we were watching videos we recorded in daily basis: shaky, the focus needed to be adjusted, and blurry. Even the angles could twist and crimp in an extreme way. If you were not getting used to seeing this kind of cinematography, you would most likely feel nauseous. But this element gives a realistic sense instead.

What really killed me the most was also the character's transition. Man, I always love transitions in the movie. The element of character's transition is what I think would move me the most in a movie, and even could make me cry at some points, but I didn't, though, on this movie. I shed tears when the emperor's life drastically shifted at the end of The Last Emperor, and also when Robin William's robot character in Bicentennial Man experienced a great change. But I never, I repeat, EVER – no matter how amazingly awesome Star Wars is – impressed by the transition of the once gentle-hearted Anakin Skywalker to becoming Darth Vader in Episode III.

Transition gives the sense of contrast and sometimes irony. It goes when a good character becomes bad and vice versa; a rich person loses all his fortune and vice versa, and so forth. The great transition at the end of the movie always makes you want to look back at the character's condition at the beginning of the movie. You kinda want to compare the character's life at the beginning of the movie and at the end, and how he underwent a change that would transform him someone different. That's when it strikes you as “that's so ironic!”.

Anyway, I won't spoil much about the specific transition I found in this movie, I just thought I'd give you some ideas from the examples I mentioned earlier. Given to the fact that the character was timid and all, *spoiler*you are likely to identify what became of him in the latter part of the movie. *spoiler*

Overall, the acting is average, but you'll find yourself falling in love with the deuteragonist, Matt. Find out why by watching the movie! Dane DeHaan, who portrayed Andrew, delivered quite a good acting. He might have the look of the boy next door but his acting really topples his image. although I think he hasn't done it to the fullest especially for a character who experienced a change.

Alex Russell who played as Andrew's cousin, Matt, deserves an appraisal as well. Matt's role was more of a guardian, brother-figure to Andrew. He was basically the wise figure of the group, the most mature, and deserved that credit for setting up the rules in using the power. Haha that's why I love him. And he's kinda cute too at some parts.

Michael B. Jordan also portrayed Steve really well. Steve had always been the “clown” in the group, the one that always came up with ideas of practical jokes and the most playful one. I think he's really adorable and audience can totally look up to him as a role model. Not only that he's sociable and a Student Body president candidate, but despite his popularity, he stays loyal with his two less popular and even secluded friends, Matt and Andrew. *spoiler* although it's sad to say that a dreadful thing came to him along the way *spoiler*.

It's a good thing the production house cast less popular actors so that they match with the format of the movie itself: a mockumentary. The casting of less popular actor in a mockumentary gives us an impression as if we were watching our friends' videos. Say, I bet it would have been awkward to see the already-famous Jake Gyllenhaal in a mockumentary.

Overall, I consider Chronicle to be the most realistic superpower-themed movie. People usually associate that kind of movie with typical “superhero vs supervillain” storyline, where the superhero, who was once a hero, retrieved a power, developed it, met the villain, and killed him the end. As the saying goes, “With big power comes big responsibility”, the bond of these boys was tested as they encountered their own enemy. That enemy was not any supervillain, but it was no other than their own superpower.

The movie might not have a strong twist. As mentioned, it emphasizes on transition. I believe, Josh Trank, the director, tries to deliver a superpower-themed story in a different way, involving an enemy that is not a visible villain, but more of an enemy within the character's selves. *spoiler*I pretty much consider the superpower itself, combined with Andrew's wish to explore his darker side, to be the antagonist. If you see the movie towards the end, you might think that there's no actual antagonist in the movie unlike stereotypical superhero movies (Andrew is just the host of the antagonist, but he isn't); the antagonist is, in short, unseen.*spoiler*

The realistic sense itself lies on the fact that we can relate the movie to us.
So basically the movie is the answer to what might be our everyday life question:

What would we do if we have a superpower? What would we do about it?

Chronicle visualizes what most of us normal people living in a modern world would think about having a superpower. Ideally, we'll use it for good, but most people or even ourselves, would prefer to do it for fun, playing pranks because we were invincible with that power. The movie basically gave you the realistic idea about how it felt like having a superpower and whether we were responsible towards it.

Chronicle gives you a chilling, tense sensation that won't make you move a muscle. Call me exaggerating, but whenever I sat on the theatre with jaw dropped, eyes widened, then I knew I was totally absorbed into the movie. This doesn't happen to movies like, strangely, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. If you're looking for an easy movie without having to interpret anything, Chronicle's storyline totally fulfills this criteria, as it's so simple and easy to understand.

Okay, so go on and see this movie. Being mindblown is guaranteed :)
It's not just another superhero/scifi flick

Btw, Elda has done a rich analysis on The Artist, which we came to see last night. Check her review!

panda eyes

HIHIHIIII

I'm truly sorry that I've been missing for sooooo long. Wow that feels like ages, doesn't it? How are you guys doing so far? Hope everything goes well.

Well, first of all, Happy Super-Belated New Year. I know it's even meaningless to say so now seeing that we're entering the second month of the year already.

Anyway, onto a more serious business. It's sad for me to say that I'm not so sure if I can blog frequently like I did before for the next few weeks till two months. Well, as you guys may recall, I used to blog like crazy a couple of months ago before I stopped on around October for no reason. I wasn't really busy those days but it's just I had no muse in blogging -.-

I'm telling you why. There are three things:
  1. I have TOEFL test in a matter of weeks and I have even barely touched the prep book...yet

  2. I'm taking 2 arts classes this quarter. 3 units each. You say, oh it doesn't sound cos normally a class has 4-5 units. But seriously, the art projects are way more demanding that what the units are worth. So, lesson learned: never underestimate the amount of units.

  3. In addition to the art classes, I'm taking 3 General Education classes. Each has more unit but strangely, less homework. But still, I need to put a lot of effort to them to get As :)

  4. UNI APPLICATIONS...
    need to say more?
I'm applying to bunch of universities and art schools now.
~Good stuff: I'm halfway to clearing up all my university applications. Yipee! I got two more tough applications to tough schools xD

~Bad stuff: Unlike normal universities where you can just submit your personal statements, transcripts, and everything in a flash, art schools require portfolio and sometimes one or TWO letters of recommendation. Even some schools require specific drawings. Quadruple the work? Definitely. But hopefully the results would turn out good *fingerscrossed*
Life after Christmas break was crazeeeeh.... I finished some of uni applications before the break but more coming afterwards! Hectic hectic hectic! Hopefully things would be settling down for real at around mid-March, cos that's when I estimate that my sources of hectic-ness will come to a stop. By then I'm sure to continue blogging like crazy and be even more productive in writing!

Well, I'm not saying I'm going to completely stop blogging. Between now and March, I'll probably post once a week if possible to keep this blog alive and running.

On the bright side, I'm bringing you some good news...

I definitely had a great time during the break and I would really love to share it to you guys. So hopefully I'll get to post the stories as soon as possible! Enthralling stories, cool pictures to come! Stay tuned!

By the way, check out this video.
How creepy that I see my mom figure in that guy.

"So skinny you need to eat more..." (yea right)

orange juice

i swim in your river flow
blinded by the beauty of yours
your energizing sunset color
drips of you fall on the floor
pinning me at once in the soil of excitement

i swim in your river flow
with the pulps running through
the reason why my heart beats of joy
as you embrace me when dawn breaks

you drew me closer yet could i not hesitate
so tantalizing your sight is it blinds me
deceiving my every thoughts

you come, invited
penetrating with desire
bomb of invigorating ticks,
explodes inside me within a minute
disintegrating all weariness

your taste embraces me tight
paralyzing every nerves
spreading inside me

yet now your sunset color is no more
your flow is no more
releasing exhilaration
drowning me in the sea of fervour

remains of you dissolve
come to embody inside me
leaving bits of smile in heart

parts of me crawl

as they beg for more of you

Wew, I never thought I'd post a poem up here. I made it within a minute merely as a challenge I accept from Elda. Well at least now you know how much I love orange juice :)

Chinese speakers needed

I was scrambling through 4 e v e r love group on Facebook and happened to find a long lost article I wrote a year ago.
Ironically, the article was published in Chinese for a local Taiwanese newspaper, much contrary to its original version (English). Even MORE ironically, I can't seem to understand any of it.
Anyway, it's translated t0 Chinese by my mom

To make matters even worse, I have seemingly lost the original document :'(

Click on the article above to get you to the article page.
Memorable journey - Overseas Chinese youth to participate in Taiwan to observe the group felt
Fourth team: Chen Keisha

At the Taoyuan International Airport, we are the fourth team counselors are college friends hugged, we cried, three weeks time off so fast, blink of an eye, to observe the group's journey coming to an end. Like yesterday, to arrive at the Taoyuan International Airport today to say goodbye.

Bear, bear three weeks in daily life counselor, enthusiasm could not bear to Taiwan, could not bear to college friends. While the short get together, we must separate. I heard the sound of treasure goodbye. The deep friendship and I will remember in their hearts, will never fade!

Aircraft arrived at Soekarno - Hatta Airport, college friends once again embrace, we are devotion.

Here I would like to thank you stay in Indonesia, but Taiwan Alumni Association President Chen Wen aunt, she was busy, made a special trip to the airport to pick us before you leave hungry she was afraid of our journey, came to give each of us a bread, She is like a good aunt, each of us carefully Dingning Zhao, this situation, we will never forget, but the text Thank you Auntie.

In Taiwan, three weeks, I learned a lot in school, not something I learned tai chi, how paper fan, do Hakka cuisine (HAKA TRADITIONAL TEA), doing MOCI cake.

To observe the group's itinerary is very rich, we visited the Tokai University, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, National Palace Museum, the famous scenic spot - Sun Moon Lake, and let me know Taiwan's history, colorful culture of Taiwan, Taiwan is also aware of the traditional Chinese arts and culture center. We visited a temple of Taiwan's traditional architectural style, folk culture and art, like paper-cut art is one of them.

In my Chinese regiment is the worst, in fact, not difficult to learn Chinese, Chinese grammar is not troublesome, unlike the English in the past tense, present tense, or future-style grammar. See college friends are talking about fluent Chinese, I said to myself, came back, I have to work harder to learn Chinese. Come on! Keisha.

In Taiwan, you can also see Aboriginal culture, Aboriginal dance, most of them live in the mountains, and now retains complete indigenous culture. We traveled almost the whole of Taiwan, from Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, college friends almost every day in the luggage heavier. Although I am not a shopaholic, but Taiwan's something cheap, 101 Mall, Shihlin Night Market, where nostalgia are college friends.

Last night in Taipei, we can not sleep, because busy to pack up, get up early to the airport, ready to present to the counselors. Think tomorrow we should separate the thought knocked the door tomorrow, no counselor, gently wake us, I kept thinking, I was the emergence of waves of frustration and melancholy.

Thank you new fourth team of counselors small, Hippo, PIZ-ZA sister, thank you three weeks meticulous care of us, I think I give you the most trouble of the members, I do not eat pork because, every time counselors are always busy trying to help me find no pork lunch, really sorry.

Want another chance, I will then Taiwan, and we meet again, next month I will fly across the Atlantic to begin my college life, but a friendship, which I will always forever in mind - the fourth team counselors and college friends, Terrific Oh! Original: Keisha

Translation: Yi-Chu Note: This is a never accept the influence of Chinese culture and has a little girl of Chinese descent, went to the United States finished the secondary school curriculum to graduate before the privilege of participating in the "Overseas Chinese Youth Study Tour of Taiwan." three weeks of Chinese cultural atmosphere full of life and collective activities, she deeply appreciate the great Chinese culture and friendship is precious, determined in the future to learn Chinese to catch up, between the lines with smooth and lively character.

The original is in English, translated by her mother, Yi-Chu.
Excuse the lame translation. I was too lazy to fix the translation cos if I did that, the result wouldn't be much better than the original. Don't worry, I've asked my mom to send me the original document which I hope could replace the current scrawny translation. You can totally tell they're ripped out of from Google translate.

Thanks to the translated article too, I finally figured out that my Chinese name turns out to be somewhat Keisha, or something that sounds like it ;) and my mom's too - Yi-Chu. What a way to trace back my Chinese heritage.

By any means, I won't be able to give you updates featuring latest pictures I took from my camera. Sad, right?
I need to find a time to go to a nearest Best buy to purchase it so you guys just need to wait for that day to come.

Don't pick up the phone

Not really in a story-telling mood on, but I'm just going to tell you what happened last night.
I was supposed to be going home to do my all homework before leaving to SF the next day (today), but turns out, there's always an obstacle heading in this kid's virtuous intention's way *coughs*.

I was "kidnapped" up till past midnight in Kevin and Tony's place. Just in case you don't know what makes me decide to sacrifice some of my late hours to stay there is because we were going to see a horror movie. Plus, Ardy came over all the way from Davis just to hang around here in the Bay Area.

Ardy initiated the idea of horror movie night. So I wouldn't miss the chance, cos when else could we do it? He invited a friend over, Tanuj, to bring the movie. I wasn't really a frontal anti of horror movies. I didn't necessarily manage to run off whenever someone said we were going to watch a horror movie. I love horror movies, only if I get to watch it with bunch of people. The more people see it, the more less frightening it looks. It's thousand times better than having to see it at midnight by yourself *giddy, looks around*

Anyway, One Missed Call was chosen. I was a little disappointed cos I've seen it before, but my expectation heightened when it turned out we were going to see the Japanese version (I saw the American version). So, Kevin, Tony, Aymee, Ardy, Stefan, Khoan (Kevin and Tony's roommate), his girlfriend, and I plopped down to our comfiest positions to get the best view of the screening wall. Yep, the best thing about Kevin and Tony's house is that they have a friggin projector!!!! which is even better than any large TVs.

Well, the movie itself follows about a rumor saying that whenever a person heard his phone ringing a creepy-sounding ringtone and picked it up, he got to receive a voice mailbox indicating a specific time in the future. If he proceeded to hear the voice mailbox, he got to hear his own voice, saying two to three lines followed with (usually) a scream.

The mailbox apparently foretells the death of the phone's owner. The phone's owner would be found dead by the indicated time and would recite the lines as heard from the mailbox, shortly before encountering his death. Nakamura Yumi (Shibasaki Kou) somehow finds herself entangled with the event when she witnessed people around her dying shortly after receiving the horrendous call. When she finds out the death call formed some sort of a chain connection, she knows she was the next in line and thus intended to reverse the curse or whatever caused the whole death call to occur.

The movie never stopped sending chills to me and to almost everyone in the room. The whole tension hasn't risen until the half portion of the movie, but as it was approaching the climax, Shibasaki Kou's convincing act didn't lower the rate of my pounding heart. Although I must say I was a little disappointed by the vague ending, but I didn't blame the movie for that. Japanese movie makers might just prefer to imply the ending rather than explaining it bluntly to audience like the American version does. The actors including Shibasaki and the detective guy themselves delivers great acting in the movie. However, it terms of effect, storyline, and the chilling sensation, Japanese version definitely owns it. Duh.

Along the movie, Tanuj never stopped teasing us scaredy girls by abruptly playing the One Missed Call ringtone in his own phone during the movie. Aymee and I nearly jumped off as a reaction. Moments later, Tanuj played Justin Bieber's Baby in his phone, saying that we might prefer to listen to that instead of the creepy sounding ringtone, since he thought JB's Baby was even much scarier the creepy sounding ringtone from the movie -__-

The movie was done by 1 am and as a result, I needed Ardy and Aymee to take me home. They even walked me to my door to make sure I was back safe, sound, and not paranoid.

Well...since this post mentions a lot about Shibasaki Kou, I guess I wouldn't miss the chance to mention one trivial fact I find about her. I don't know if you guys think the same, hopefully you do. I always knew Shibasaki Kou always reminds me of someone first time I saw her on Orange Days (I give my credit to Elda for introducing this drama to me).

Apparently that other look-a-like person turns out to beeee.....

No other than Victoria or Song Qian of f(x).
Don't ya think? Look at the big eyes and similar hairstyle! Only Shibasaki Kou has fiercer and sharper features.

Dear appetite...

WHERE
ART
THOU?

Did I leave you in Singapore or Indonesia?
Have you evaporated somewhere?
You haven't showed me your presence ever since I arrived back in the US.

In any case, I'm sad. I've been skipping quite some meal time.
For sure I know it doesn't sound good.
