Halloween at Disneyland Part 4: Out standing indeed

Note: Due to my phone battery dying at this point during my Disneyland trip, the rest of the story will just be pure text. You'll see one picture at the end though.

Previously: The whole park turned into a mass chorus of children singing to the powerful ballad. Children are addicted to this song. There's been stories that parents are getting tired of it. So when I heard a mom next to me groan and mumble “Here we go.” I wouldn't be surprised. Jess and I sang along with the other 5-10 year-old Frozen addicts. No need to be embarrassed. Disneyland is the only place we can let go of our inner child.

The firework ended at around 10. We had a couple more minutes before we could use the pass to Indiana Jones. We arrived at Adventureland earlier than we thought despite the people traffic and we still had roughly fifteen minutes before the fastpass for Indy was valid. Jungle Cruise is right next to Indy ride and it only had five to ten minutes wait. So might as well.

My previous Jungle Cruise experiences were always such a bore, but this one was exceptionally different. The skipper, Kim (she's so good I even remember her name) had a good sense of humor, more like sarcastic. She's so good at puns and dry jokes. But really, that's what makes her interesting. She spoke in a lazy tone while delivering the jokes, making you want to go “Ha-ha.” slowly. “Who woke up feeling like I have to go to Jungle Cruise today?” she said. Some people raised their hands. “Yeah me too.” Another one, the ultimate one that she threw right at the end of the ride. “You guys are outstanding. Yeah you'll be out standing on the dock.” Gold!

Halloween at Disneyland Part 3: Let it Go

Previously: We strolled a bit more as the sun was starting to go down. We had spent over eight hours in the parks. We had about seven more hours to spend before we wrapped up (aka the parks were closed). At about six-ish, we went to Astro Blasters as scheduled in our fastpasses. Fastpass schedule varies depending on the availability. We got a late hour for Indy because of how popular the ride was. But at least we still got them.
Astro Blasters was classics. Despite it being slow moving, somehow I found it mildly intense because I was always determined to get a high score. Last time I went here with my dad, I defeated his scores. Now I defeated Jess. I honestly didn't know how it worked. Aiming at the targets is hard, so I just randomly shot all over the place. As I did, my score was just getting higher and higher. So I wasn't sure how it happened.

Getting out of the Blasters, Jess and I went back to Fantasyland. But en route, we spotted The Avengers meet and greet with Thor and Captain America. The wait was forty minutes, which wasn't quite bad. When else would you meet the Avengers? Jess and I kept gushing about the resemblance of the Thor guy with Chris Hemsworth, and how I'd totally wish he really was Chris Hemsworth. The guy who played Thor at Disneyland actually nailed the accent but he looked less rogue-ish than Hemsworth. At least he tried.

Halloween at Disneyland Part 2: The Princesses Encounter

Previously: After Radiator Springs Racers, Jess and I went to the Paradise Pier. We dropped by at Boudin Bakery Tour and got a fresh loaf of bread. Then we ended up getting lunch at Garden Grill with a glass of fresh Strawberry margarita from Rita Margarita in a sunny day. Our lunch couldn't be more perfect, and so was the weather. Jess ended up finishing the margarita.

At around 12.30 pm, after we finished our lunch, we headed to the Hyperion Theatre to catch Aladdin Musical Spectacular. It marked my second time watching it. The first time happened six years ago with my mom and I loved it. The genie is and will always be the real star of the show, pulling jokes and pop culture references that we all know, from Patriots football to Taylor Swift.
His jokes never get old and it is even sad to learn that the show would have less than a hundred more before it ended for good on December. Next year, the theatre would host a Frozen Musical to replace Aladdin. I reached the point where Frozen has become increasingly overrated that it has to replace a beloved classic show such as Aladdin. Anyway...

Halloween at Disneyland Part 1: Grim Grinning Ghosts

Two weeks ago marked the second time for me to visit Disneyland in a year. Two weeks ago marked the fourth time I went to Disneyland after three years living in LA, and yet I'm still not an annual passholder. But anyway, it doesn't matter. What matters is about a Disneyland visit is, it'll be a blast as long as you have the perfect partner.

I went on a Friday morning before Halloween with Jess, who came all the way here from San Jose almost exclusively for a Disneyland visit. As someone who barely has anyone to go there with, I couldn't say no. Jess and I woke up at 6.15 am. We planned on spending the whole day there and Disney's California Adventure. When I said the whole day, I really meant from the moment the parks opened until they closed. I have never been so determined to wake up this early before. Waking up at 6 for any other purposes has always been a pain. But Jess and I decided to sleep early last night so this could happen.

Ich bin da! There was apparently no ride or attractions in Germany. We just went into the shop and Vivia tried a sample of ham, cheese, and bratwurst for a small, snack-like portion, for only $5.00. The meal wash't a part of the festival though, but still, $5.00 for an authentic German dish was worth it. 

Back to the Giant Golfball - EPCOT (Part 1)

Hey there, it's been a while since I posted the last time. I've been pretty busy these days, with me moving to Melbourne (the one in Florida, not in Australia) for internship for 4 months. Settling down is never easy but I got it over with soon. I'll talk further about Melbourne in my next posts but now, let's get on to something more exciting! 

It's been approximately two years since I transferred to Art Center. A year before, I was still in De Anza, and one of the most magnificent vacations I've ever had in my entire period in US happened as I went to Orlando and New York in one winter occasion. Living in Melbourne gives me a chance to revisit Walt Disney World, whom I got to spend quite some time there three years ago with Elda, Aymee, and Ardy, since Melbourne is only an hour away from the so-called theme park capital of US. 

This very weekend, I had a blast revisiting one of Walt Disney World parks, and that was EPCOT. Vivia, my current roommate and colleague, and I had been planning to go to EPCOT since last week, but the weather had always been in the way. It had been raining for the past couple of weeks here in Florida and being drenched in the outdoors is the last thing we would ever want to be. However, we finally got to go this week. 

Magic Happens - Pt 04

The night was getting colder. I started to shiver since I already got soaked from the previous ride, and my soaked shirts weren't dry yet, so Tiffany lent me her comfy, warm sweater. All of a sudden, our boat was halted by a boat ahead of us that also stopped. We thought we were just lining up to plunge down the first waterfall, because of course, only one boat at a time could plunge down the drop. The drop was just one boat away from us, but we waited and waited.
We all kept on saying how bad the boat's position was in front of us, because they were at the tip of the waterfall and the boat sort of tilted.
The gates didn't even open to allow the boat right next to us to plunge down. Then an announcement echoed, remarking that the ride was broken. I heard chorus of groans from my friends as well as people from other boats. The people in the boat before us started singing along to Backstreet Boys, which we followed.

Magic Happens - Pt 03

Before we got onto rides here in California Adventure, we stopped for a second to see a captivating street jazz show on Buena Vista Street. The group was called 5 Dime or something like that, and the singer truly had a jazzy voice that hypnotized all the visitors to stop by to spend some time seeing the show. She surprisingly has the charisma of Tiana from Princess and the Frog! Once in a while, she would invite one person to three children to come up and sing with her (at this moment, my friends and I just moved back a little bit so she wouldn't notice us).
The first guy was just normally dancing with her as she was playing her scarf with him. Then she pulled another one - a woman - to dance with the guy. It turns out the woman was the guy's wife. That was the sweetest thing ever.

When we were done meeting Merida, the four of us hung out in Fantasyland.

We got on to Mad Tea Party, just for the heck of it. Well it was fun though! We managed to spin the cup as strong as we could only to find out that no matter how strong we spin it, the speed would remain the same.

Magic Happens - Pt 01

You might be familiar with the so-called “Dreams come true” term popularized by Disney has apparently proven itself on me. A week after Sherin, Tiffany, and I met, and after Vinny came to the States, Tiffany came up with the idea of going to Disneyland. Even better, she has a friend who works there and can give us discounted tickets. Then it was decided and confirmed that we would go there on June 29.

So June 29, 2013 was probably the most memorable date in my whole 3 years of living in US, well, at least for a fan of Disney like me. You know that I traveled for a week or so to Orlando to visit Walt Disney World roughly two years ago. Ironically, despite having lived in California for 3 years as a student, I have never visited Disneyland nor California Adventure. I did visit it twice though, first when I was seven and the latest one was back in 2009 when I had to make up an excuse to ditch school by saying I was sick.

SP 13: The Other Side of LA - Pt 2

Moving onto the second part!

After an exhausting day the day before, Elda and I woke up groggily quite early in the morning. Okay, 7.30 am. Half an hour later than planned, but we were so darn tired. We still had plenty of places to go to. Apparently, we spent quite some time talking in front of the bathroom door for a couple of minutes. In the end, we took off from my apartment at around 10. Before heading to our first destination of the day, Warner Bros Entertainment, we dropped by at McD to get our breakfast. I had an egg muffin and so did Elda. I also needed to go to an auto service to get my car briefly checked, since the day before, the Maintenance Required light just flashed. Actually it wasn't as critical as I thought, but I was just afraid my car would break down in the middle of freeway. After a quick check, the staff told me nothing was critical.

Okay, let's head straight to the first destination of the day, Warner Bros Entertainment! When you think of a studio tour, you might think of Universal Studios, but this time, it's different. Warner Bros might not have a fancy theme park full of special effects. But the tour would be longer and more detailed as we would get to walk through some props and sets!

Hello!

I finally got to update my blog, again. It seems pretty hard doing so since I'm in an art school now and everything really gets hectic, especially with all the label of "top design school" and what-not. Well, actually life isn't always hectic, but it does get hectic most of the time. Catching up with deadlines and meeting standards are always the top priorities. I have expected my life would be dominated with continuous all-nighters, but apparently it's not as bad as I thought. I managed to organize my time. It sometimes works, it sometimes doesn't, but when it doesn't, the effect itself isn't that bad either since I could still catch up with my assignments and turn them in on time, but it's better if it works.

ORLANDO for winter. pt 8: walk the dinosaur

We didn't know such a fun ride would take up time. It was 2.15 pm when we suddenly remembered of the fast pass appointment we had earlier with the Indonesian cast member. Elda and I skipped another chance of getting into Expedition Everest, much to my regret. But this time, while the others scrammed towards the ride, Elda and I went to DINOSAUR ride to get fast pass to everyone. So basically Aymee, Ardy, Lina, Nia, Wendelin, and Melissa gave all their Disney park tickets to Elda and I so we could get them fast pass tickets for DINOSAUR.

DINOLAND USA

Welcome to the land where the powerful ancient creatures once ruled the earth! Animal Kingdom gave another distinct vibe when we entered this territory. Elda and I went straight to DINOSAUR ride's fastpass booth and quickly purchased the fastpass tickets for everyone.

ORLANDO for winter. pt 5: it's a high-tech world after all

Previously: Seriously, I didn't feel in a Disney park. This whole vibe didn't convince me I was in one, at least.

- Morocco:

The whole setting transported us all back to the times of Arabian nights! I was blown away with again, a different atmosphere it offers. The jasmine-accented shops sold various Arabian-related attributes, from carpet to furnitures and decorations, like they were all out straight from the movie Aladdin. The exit of the shops led to an entry to the marketplace, where more Arabian attributes and items were offered to the tourists.

Previously: It was a disbelief, considering it was one of the places I'd always been dying to go to. The day really left me with a distinct impression and I somehow hoped I would be able to experience the same thing all over again :)

- DAY 4: DECEMBER 20, 2011 -

Our days onwards would be continued with Aymee and Ardy, who just arrived last night at around 3 am. We were originally planning to go to Seaworld, but the only shuttle to go there would take off from the hotel at 7.20 am – that's very early especially considering Aymee and Ardy only had small portions of sleep. So change of schedule, Epcot was chosen! The earliest and only shuttle would be ready by 11am so we all could have a chance to wake up late.

Unlike the day before, we woke up at 9 am, took a shower, and got ready to go to the second out of four Disney parks in Orlando. The shuttle took us at 11.00 am and we reached there at around 11.30 am. Much unexpectedly as yesterday's visit to Magic Kingdom, there were lots more people packed outside the entrance in order to go in. I guess going to a theme park a little late was taking its toll, but anyway.

ORLANDO for winter. pt 3: when you wish upon a star

Previously: It was very brief. We stayed inside the plane while looking out to the still-dark, Kansas landscape before the plane took off for Boston...and this time for real.

- DAY 3: DECEMBER 19, 2011 -

Wakey wakey! It's day 3! The wait is over! Two people's dreams are about to come true (mine particularly, haha, I sound biased enough, don't I? ^^). The exhilaration of going to Magic Kingdom was so overwhelming that I even picked out my best outfit I brought and dressed up, considering I'd go to the most awaited site I'd ever always dreamed of going.

Shortly after munching on our breakfast we brought the night before, we got on the 9.05 am shuttle to Animal Kingdom. You ask, why Animal Kingdom? When we're actually scheduled to go to Magic Kingdom today? It's simply because there was no morning shuttle to Magic Kingdom, so we needed to drop by at Animal Kingdom before transferring by Disney parks transportation to the ultimate destination.

My Feb US Trip - Part 4

Previously: At last, we shared our stories that day and that we happened to see the red carpet of Oscars (still it was one of the most memorable moments ever to happen that day). As I was eating my spaghetti, my mom said that the next day we would go to Disneyland (round 2), since we had two days passes.Alright, we went home to the hotel and crashed on the bed, ready for Disneyland round 2 the next day!!

Alrighty, again, I woke up at 6. Nothing much, except this time, it wasn't the alarm clock set to wake me up, but instead my mom. She was so excited to go to Disneyland Round 2 this time and when she woke me up, she said. "Hurry up! Indiana Jones Ride is waiting!! I don't want the queue to get longer!! We have to be there as early as we can! Indiana Jones! Indiana Jones!!" Aha...I see, she couldn't wait for the Indiana Jones ride. Well, the day before she was pretty eager to go to that ride but the queue was very looonggg and she was very determined this time that she would get that early before the queue got long.

Lazily, I got up, took a shower, had a breakfast with my dad who was about to take off for the helicopter exhibition that day, and took off to Disneyland at around 7 am. I was still sleepy at that moment that I could sleep while walking (aah lebay!). We entered the Grand Californian hotel and went through the Disney Downtown, where most shops were still closed and some were about to be opened.

At the end of the Disney Downtown, a bunch of people gathered around in front of the entrance. Apparently Disneyland was still closed and some visitors chose to sit near the fountain or just stood there waiting for the theme park to be opened. Not long after that, it was opened and my mom eagerly pulled my hand towards the Indiana Jones ride and at that moment, I was STILL sleepy. I was very tired that morning maybe because I was too excited to have visited Hollywood (which is one of the places I'd kill for going)

INDY RIDE
Of course, the ride just opened but there were already quite a lot of people lining up, but not as many as yesterday and it only took about 5-10 minutes for queueing. While lining up, I was almost - once again - fell asleep. I kind of hoped that this ride would be quite bumpy that it would be a warming up for me before starting the day (sorta like jogging or morning exercises, but this time, we exercised using a thrill ride). Finally my mom and I got onto the ride. Well, she was right to choose this ride for "morning exercise" because I instantly got shaken here and there, going through many drops before finally at the end of the ride, I was 100% awake (it worked!!)

Then we went to Mickey Toon Town and took a look at Mickey's, Minnie's, etc's houses.

But nothing much to see there though. I did go to Mickey's House, saw the unique, cartoon-ish furnitures just like the ones in Mickey cartoons, and there was also a room where visitors could take a picture with Mickey but it was a looongg queue and I was kind of tired and hungry. Then we went outside and bought two hotdogs for lunch. We sat near a fountain while munching on our hotdogs and seeing the mini roller coaster ride in Mickey's Toon Town.


then, I read the brochure that there was a spot near Mickey's Toon Town to take pictures with Disney Princesses. I was *embarrassed* a Disney princess fan and I was quite determined to take pictures with them, so I got on the long queue, longer than the any queues we'd ever been in Disneyland. I mean, hey, Disney Princess is like my favorite. Not that I dreamed to become one like any other girls but I just love their dresses. Aurora and Belle are my favorites and I was hoping to see them. So I lined up along with other girls dressing up in their Disney princess costume, some dressed as Aurora (Aurora had the best dress among other Disney Princesses), Jasmine, and...well, mostly dressed as Aurora.


Finally it was my turn and the first princess turned out to be Ariel (she had legs, not fins surprisingly. Just kidding, what I meant here is, the cosplayer dressed not as a mermaid but a blue dress) and then the next princess was Belle, with this nice yellow coat (haha, I'm talking like a fashion police!), and the next one was Jasmine. She asked my name and I answered "My name is Carissa, from Indonesia." She replied. "Hi Carissa. Nice to meet you, I'm Jasmine from Agrabah."

After that, we went off for other rides, such as:

• Storybook Land Canal Boats: my mom was very eager to get on this ride, and she was pretty sure it would be another "thrill" ride like Indy. But I told my mom that it was only a normal boat ride (and slow too) cruising along the river to see miniatures of Disney palaces. Nothing much. I was even almost sleeping on the boat. And when we got off the boat, she complained. "That was all? Not cool!" she said, and I was like. "Told you so." >.<


• Peter Pan's Flight: It was always my mom's favorite. She loved this ride the most.
• Alice and Wonderland: ahem, my favorite this time
• It's a Small World: like "Istana Boneka" in Dufan only this one is in English version.
• Pinnochio's Daring Journey: Nothing much. It's just like Alice in Wonderland.


• Snow White's Scary Adventures: It was INDEED scary. I didn't know it would be scarier than Haunted Mansion, since this ride focused much on Snow White being lost in the forest and feeling haunted.
  
• The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh: Just like Alice and Pinnochio's ride. Only the ride cart is designed like a bee's house and it shook slowly back and forth while moving. It was enjoyable though.
  
• Autopia: Like a gokart ride.

While taking a break from the rides, my mom suddenly got interested in the event she read on the brochure. It said that there was this daily event called Pixar Playparade held in Disney's California Adventure and she was very eager to see it (Parades are always her favorites). It would be held at 5 pm so all we had to do was just wait.


It was already late afternoon (almost sunset) and I was thinking to have another last ride (in the Disneyland) before we took off to Disney's California Adventure. And the last ride turned out to be another ride in Haunted Mansion. It was very impressive that I wanted to go there for the second time. After that, we took off to Disney's California Adventure which was located right across Disneyland Park. Thankfully, we didn't need to pay for the admission because the 2 days passes we had already included an admission to Disney's California Adventure.

After entering it, my mom quickly took a position on the side of the streets along with other people waiting for the parade. Not long after that, the parade began and Pixar characters started to come out one by one. Sorry for the poor qualities of the pictures. I'm a poor photographer, I gotta say that. But at least better than my mom :). I like Lightning McQueen the best, because he's made out of real car, modified, and you should see his eyes. It moved around.

ALADDIN PLAY
Well, after the parade, we strolled around Disney's California Adventure, visited Animation Museum to see how animation (2D and 3D) were made, which was pretty cool. Then we watched Aladdin Musical play. While lining up, I looked at the Hollywood Hotel Tower of Terror ride. I could see the lift was coming up and then there was a spark of light before the lift fell, along with screams. It was a definitely no-no ride for me, since I don't really like drop rides. Then we entered the theatre and the show began. It was FANTASTIC! The best Disney play I've ever seen. It had amazing sets, sceneries, cast, and effect. During the "A Whole New World" scene, the cast got on this carpet tied to the ceiling and it had an impression as if it really flew.


My mom was very impressed by it and said that it was worth it. The next ride (it was already dark but the theme park was still crowded), we went to Monster's Inc Ride which was the newest ride in the theme park. It was almost like rides in Fantasyland in Disneyland (Alice, Pinnochio, etc), but there was a twist at the end of the ride. You know Ross, the slimy green monster from the movie? We stopped for a while in front of her statue as it moved and identified the visitors sitting on the cart. She said. "Hey you, man on the second row. I'll be in your closet tonight." I had a feeling it was not a cassette but instead there was an operator controlling it. :)


A BUG'S LIFE RIDE
Ookkkaayy...it was already late and the last ride was 'It's Tough to be a Bug'. It was actually like a 3D short movie with Flik as the host. He explained how tough it was to be a bug. We were required to wear a 3D glasses. It was pretty impressive yet annoying, since there were these strange, bug-ish smell coming out when the bugs appeared on the screen and pretended that they sprayed something to the audience. Everybody went 'ewww....smells gross!!'. At the end of the show, Flik said "Please let the bugs to get out of the studio first". Everybody was questioned with this, and while still sitting, suddenly everyone felt like there were hundreds of bugs moving under them. Of course, everyone jolted out of the seats. It was very funny! Especially my mom was panic because she thought they were real bugs. Of course not.

Alright, it was already late and the theme park was getting quieter. I told my mom. "We're going for another right tonight." She asked. "What ride? It's already late." I explained to her. "So in this ride, we go into a room where there's this bed and a TV. And we sit on this bed..." My mom replied. "You mean going back to the 'hotel'?" Haha... Somehow I hoped we could still spend longer time in Disney's California Adventure because we didn't know that there were still other exciting rides other than Disneyland park. Well, better next time.

We found the shortcut to the Grand Californian hotel and went straight back to the hotel. We had dinner and slept. Enough with Disney, tomorrow......UNIVERSAL STUDIOS!!!!

My Feb US Trip - Part 2

Previously: At 5.30, my dad, mom, and I had a dinner in this Chinese Restaurant called Panda, minus his friends. It's a bit further than Disneyland so you have to walk less than a mile to get to this restaurant. This Panda restaurant was verrrryyyy quiet and it was located in a row of quiet restaurants as well. So it seemed that my family was the only ones to eat there. But whatever.
Then we went home to the hotel and slept at 6.00 pm!! Wow, too early?

DISNEYLAND DAY!!! So as planned last night? Forgot to mention: when my family went

home to the hotel, we met my dad's friends who apparently planned to go to Disneyland the next day. So we couldn't surely shake our heads at that.

We woke up in the morning, around 6 and had breakfast in this small restaurant. It's not a luxury restaurant this hotel has anyway. It doesn't even have a name but still it got some tasty food. I ate two cold, boiled eggs, a sandwich, and sipped hot chocolate. Seriously, when I sipped hot chocolate, this kinda reminds me about school, since I loved buying hot chocolate in the first break time.

Anyway, after the breakfast, we got ready and went to the receptionist to ask the route to get to the entrance of Disneyland. She said that we needed to cross the crossroad to go to this hotel called PARADISE PIER (it's a nice, 5 star hotel with some Little Mermaid-ish theme, yet with "nice" rate as well, hehe). Across this hotel is another nice hotel called The Grand Californian, to which the receptionist said we needed to go through the lobby and there was a connecting door to Disney Downtown (it's like a row of shops in which Disneyland entrance is located at the end of it). It's 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

Also, my dad's friend's wife suggested that the next day we could take a stroll in LA and Hollywood. So my mom booked for Hollywood trip tomorrow for three people, minus the guys since they had some meetings to catch up on. While my mom was booking, I had my time to log on to my Facebook where one of my friends greeted me and asked "You haven't slept yet? It's late." and I told her that I was in America and it was morning there. She was like wow. I know, somehow I felt guilty for leaving school and trading it with vacation. La!
My mom decided to buy two days pass tickets for her and me, because we would most likely spend another day there. But my dad and his friends - due to their meetings - couldn't come to Disneyland another day.

Anyway, we took a walk down the Main Street of USA and stopped to see an ensemble of unique dressed people playing instruments and singing familiar Disney songs. Then we warmed up before entering some rides by stopping in an ice cream parlor to have morning snacks.

Tomorrow's gonna be exciting.By the afternoon, we paused our activities for lunch and while having lunch, we happened to see a Star Wars Show for kids. It's like a Jedi Padawan training, where kids were chosen to come to the stage and were given some tips how to be a Padawan. A bit strange though, since it's a Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox production, not Disney. Anyway still it's funny to watch. lol

We went home in the evening, dinner in a diner called Coco's (right in the parking lot of the travellodge) and happened to meet a nice waitress named Maria, then after going back to the hotel, I slept while watching HBO. I remembered it was...One Missed Call? The movie? While sleeping, I was a bit nervous about tomorrow. Hollywood. As in one of the places I was dying to go to. And the next day it would come to reality. Wow.
